Little Cottage B&B

Little Cottage B&B is situated within easy access of Reading and Basingstoke in Hampshire UK and has three rooms, all en-suite.

Chris and Thérése Abbott have extended the cottage to take advantage of its wonderful position on the edge of heathland to one side and distant views towards Alton 15 miles away to the south. Hazeley Heath is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SPA (Special Protected Area) because of the rare varieties of birds, butterflies and plants.

On an early summer's evening you may well hear the chirring of a nightjar, one of the rare birds, and it is not uncommon to see fallow, roe and muntjac deer, and of course foxes, squirrels, rabbits and even the odd badger out on the heath or even in the garden.

Little Cottage is a pleasing mix of old and new and larger than the name implies. You enter a traditional cottage and go through to a large open plan sitting room, where guests are welcome to sit and relax or watch television, and which opens on to a large terrace with its amazing views. You could be in the middle of nowhere!

The single and twin (with 2 single beds but can be combined for a super kingsize double) rooms both have an ensuite shower, basin and wc, and the double room (king-size bed), which also has patio doors opening on to the terrace, has a bath with shower, basin and wc en suite. Friesian cows or welsh black sheep can often be seen placidly grazing in adjoining fields. The double room is on the other end of the house from the other bedrooms and is beautifully quiet and relaxing.

Little Cottage has easy access to the M3 and M4. The nearest train station is Winchfield on the line to Waterloo. The nearest village is Hartley Wintney (on the A30) and the nearest towns are Basingstoke (about 9 miles), Reading (about 11 miles), Fleet or Camberley. Also convenient for Rotherwick, Heckfield, Mattingley, Hook, Eversley, and Farnborough. It takes about 45 minutes to Heathrow Airport and about 1 hour to Gatwick Airport.

Within easy access are The Vyne, Sherfield on Loddon, and West Green Garden (both National Trust) Stratfield Saye, Wellington Country Park, the Roman town of Silchester, and Old Basing House. A bit further, but still within half an hour's drive are Windsor Castle and Great Park, Wisley Gardens, Savill Gardens, Jane Austen's house at Steventon, Gilbert White's house at Selborne, and Winchester with its wonderful cathedral and King Arthur's Round Table.

There are plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby and the nearest pub is a 15 minute walk across the heath (preferably in fine weather!)
